We tend to have instant reactions to basically anything we come across. Ugly people? Ew. Apples? Ew. Kittens? Yay! So what is it that we base these reactions on? Do we tend to the mean? While we usually seem accepting of differences, we all know that really, we hate anything out of the ordinary. It is simply the definition of ordinary that seems to carry slight variances among us.
So what is it that makes us hate anything that is different? We seem to be afraid of things we don't know, but things we do know can just as easily hurt us. Yet we encourage it so much: individuality, uniqueness.... We always tell people to be themselves, but in reality, we don't want them to be themselves, we want them to be us. We assume we are unique, and that this uniqueness places us in a better position in a sense than other people, and who do we love more than ourselves? Why would we want anyone to be themselves when we are so clearly against anything that is not us?
How would we measure average-ness? Would the person who is best at being average cease to be average?
